BROOKLYN, N.Y— The LIU Brooklyn baseball team opened its final home series at LIU Field with a 3-1 setback against CCSU on Thursday. The Blue Devils capitalized on two Blackbird errors in the eighth inning to take the series opener.

The contest opened with a pitchers duel through the opening three innings between CCSU's Tom Curtin and senior Zach Pederson. LIU earned the lone hit in that stretch with a leadoff single from senior Joe Mercadante to open the bottom of the first.

CCSU threatened with the bases loaded with two outs in the top half of the fourth but Pederson got the pop out to second base to end the frame.

The visiting Blue Devils registered the game's first run in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out double to left center field.

LIU finally got to Curtin in the bottom of the seventh inning as senior Alex Briggs recorded a leadoff triple to left center field. He scored in the next at bat as senior Gregory Vaughn Jr. picked up the RBI single to right field to tie the game up at 1-1. The Blackbirds looked to make some more damage with a pair of runners on with one out but CCSU escaped the inning on back-to-back strikeouts.

CCSU took hold of the lead in the eighth inning with a runner on and one-out. An errant throw at third allowed the runner from first to score from first base as the throw to the plate at first sailed just high for the 2-1 lead. The Blue Devils recorded a RBI single to left center to push the lead to 3-1.

LIU opened the bottom half of the eighth with a pair of runners on base. After a strikeout, the Blue Devils picked up a double play to escape trouble and hold on to lead for the final inning.

The Blackbirds were outhit 7-4 by CCSU on Thursday. LIU also stranded seven runners to the Blue Devils five in the game.

Pederson went six and two thirds for LIU in the no decision. He scattered five hits to just one run scored and fanned a season-high seven batters. Junior Rob Griswold suffered the loss in relief for LIU.
