ALBANY, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Albany on Saturday afternoon. The Blackbirds fell 10-1 in game one and dropped a 4-2 decision in game two to the Great Danes in seven innings.
Game 1 - Albany 10, LIU 1
A quick game to start as the first two and a half innings saw just one batter over the minimum. The Great Danes broke open the scoring in the bottom of third inning, plating three runs on four hits to take the 3-0 lead.
Albany added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits to add to the lead. LIU scratched their lone run in the top of the sixth inning. Senior
Luiny Monegro opened the frame with a single to right field. He scored all the way from first on a double to deep center field by sophomore
Colin Adams.
The Great Danes offense added a run in the seventh inning before capping the scoring with a four-run eighth inning to bring the final score to 10-1.
LIU was outhit 12-5 in the opening contest by Albany, stranding just three runners on base.
Junior
Jackson Svete suffered the decision for the Blackbirds, surrendering five runs in four innings of work. Senior
Anthony Rupp logged three and two third innings of relief Redshirt-sophomore
Frank Cerillo pitched the final two thirds, registering a pair of strikeouts.
Game 2 - Albany 4, LIU 2 (7 inn.)
The Blackbirds started the scoring in game two on a one-out RBI double by junior
Tim Bechtold to score senior
Andrew Smith from second base.
Albany answered right back with a leadoff home run in the bottom half of the frame to tie it up at 1-1. The home team broke the tie game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits to jump ahead 4-1.
Looking to rally in the top of the seventh, LIU got runners on first and second with two outs. Senior
Joe Mercadante drove in Bechtold from second with a RBI single to right. Albany recorded a fly out to right field to end the game as the Blackbirds had the tying run on base.
Freshman
Alec Huertas picked up the loss, pitching the first five and a third innings. Senior
Jonathan Schreier pitched the final two thirds in relief, registering a strikeout.
