BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn head men's basketball coach Jack Perri has announced the additions of Jerome Frink (Jersey City, N.J.), Martin Hermannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Jonathan Tshibuy (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) to the program for the 2014-15 season. The three student-athletes are the final members of a talented seven-player incoming class that will infuse depth and talent to the Blackbirds roster.
"We are very excited to add three more student-athletes to our incoming class, Perri said. "They are great kids that will be welcomed into the LIU-Brooklyn family."
Frink comes to LIU Brooklyn after spending two seasons at Florida International, and will sit out the 2014-15 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules. An impact player from the moment he stepped foot on the FIU campus, Frink averaged 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds as a freshman to help the Golden Panthers to 18 wins. As a sophomore, the 6-7 forward started all 31 games and shot 45.9 percent from the floor while scoring 8.4 points per contest.
As a prep player, Frink played for legendary head coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony's (N.J.) and helped the Friars to a 65-0 record over two seasons, consecutive NJSIAA Tournament of Champion titles and one national championship. As a senior, he was named First Team All-State by the Star Ledger after scoring 16 points and pulling down six rebounds per game in the New Jersey State tournament.
Perri on Frink: "Jerome comes from a great family and played for two highly competitive programs in the past. He was here during our summer session and immediately fit in. He is a talented and tough forward that has a great work ethic and demeanor. He will really help us in practice this year with his overall competitiveness and toughness. He will have a huge impact on our program even while he is sitting out for the year."
Hermannsson brings a vast amount of international experience to LIU Brooklyn from his native Iceland, where he is the second-youngest member of the Iceland National Basketball Team. A 6-3 guard, Hermannsson played this past season for KR Reykjavik in the Dominos League and was named Championship Series MVP as he led the team to a 30-3 record and a league title. In 31 contests for his club, Hermannsson averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 51.5 percent from the floor and 42.0 percent from three-point range.
In 2012, Hermannsson teamed up with fellow incoming freshman Elvar Fridriksson to compete in the FIBA U18 European Championships in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over nine contests, Hermannsson averaged a team-high 17.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists. He went for 26 points, six rebounds and six steals in an 84-81 victory over Sweden, and scored 20 points or more five times. The duo also played for the country's national team at the recent FIBA EuroBasket 2015 second qualification round in August, helping the squad to a pair of victories and the country's first ever berth into a EuroBasket tournament.
Perri on Hermannsson: "Martin is a tremendous person from a real good family. He is a talented combo guard with good size and a great ability to play with or without the ball in his hands. He can score in a variety of ways and his basketball IQ is off the charts. He should have an immediate impact on our program."
Tshibuy will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after playing for Missouri State University-West Plains for two years. As a freshman, Tshibuy started 17 games for the 22-9 Grizzlies and averages 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. The 6-5, 235-pound forward played in nine contests last season, averaging 10.3 points per game.
Prior to playing at MSU-West Plains, Tshibuy led Ahuntsic Prep School in Canada to a Final Four appearance in the CCAA National Tournament. He averaged 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in his final season at Ahuntsic before finishing out his prep career at The Bullis School in Potomac, Md. Coming out of high school, he was given an 88 rating by ESPN.com and was ranked as the 16th-best player in the state of Maryland.
Perri on Tshibuy: "Jonathan is a really nice kid that will help give us some depth in our frontcourt. He is a versatile forward that can create mismatches with his ability to attack the basket from the perimeter. I like his ability to defend mulitiple positions and compete on the glass as well."
Frink, Hermannsson and Tshibuy join four other newcomers for the 2014-15 season: Fridriksson, Jamil Hood (Albany, N.Y.), Trevin Woods (Houston, Texas) and Trevon Woods (Houston, Texas).
