2019-20 LIU Men's Basketball Schedule
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU men's basketball team, playing for the first time as the Sharks and under the direction of third-year head coach Derek Kellogg, announced their 2019-20 schedule Wednesday afternoon. The Sharks will play 13 games at home in Brooklyn, including at least one at the Barclays Center, the home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. The dates and opponents for LIU's Barclays Center games will be released at a later date.
LIU will open the 2019-20 schedule playing an Atlantic 10 team in two of their first three games. The Sharks will open the season on the road, taking on Rhode Island on the first day of NCAA competition, Tuesday, November 5. The Sharks will also hit the road to face off against A10 foe George Mason, Wednesday, Nov. 13. LIU opens the season at home in the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn, hosting UMass Lowell on Friday, November 8. That game marks the only time the Sharks will play at home in the month of November.
LIU will then hit the road for four games as a part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. The Sharks will face off against San Diego State (Nov. 22) and Texas Tech (Nov. 24) on campus sites, before heading to Las Vegas for two games, November 28 and 29, to culminate the tournament. Iowa and Creighton will also take part in the tournament. The stretch will mark the most difficult of the season for the Sharks, as both the Aztecs and the Red Raiders won 20+ games last season, and Texas Tech advanced to the NCAA National Championship Final.
LIU will return to the East Coast for two more road trips at Army (Dec. 7) and Rider (Dec. 14), before coming home for a three-game home stand. The Sharks will host Delaware (Dec. 20), Saint Peter's (Dec. 22) and Division III's Centenary University (Dec. 28) to finish out non-conference play.
LIU will open Northeast Conference play on the road, taking on Mount St. Mary's in the league opener, Saturday, January 4. The Sharks will then host CCSU (Jan. 9) and defending NEC champions Fairleigh Dickinson (Jan. 11) in their league home opening weekend in Brooklyn.
The Sharks will take on St. Francis Brooklyn (Jan. 15), Bryant (Jan. 18) and Wanger (Jan. 20) in a road spree, before hosting Saint Francis U. (Jan. 23) and Robert Morris (Jan. 25) to close out the first month of the year.
LIU will play the newest member of the NEC, Merrimack College, twice this esason, traveling to North Andover, Mass. to face off against the Raiders on February 1, before hosting them a week later in Brooklyn (Feb. 8). LIU will also host Mount St. Mary's (Feb. 6), Sacred Heart (Feb. 15), the Terriers (Feb. 18) and the Seahawks (Feb. 27) at home. But the Sharks will spend most of the tail-half of the league season on the road, traveling to take on CCSU (Feb. 13), FDU (Feb. 21), Saint Francis U. (Feb. 23) and Sacred Heart (Feb. 29) to wrap up the regular season.
This year's NEC Tournament quarterfinals round is slated for March 4, while the semifinals will take place March 7 and the championship will be March 10, with all tournament games being hosted by the highest remaining seed.
