BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn sophomore Martin Hermannsson was named Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week on Monday. The award, which he shares with Wagner's Michael Carey, is the second of the season for the Icelandic guard and the fifth time a Blackbird has received weekly honors from the league.
Hermannsson put together an impressive all-around week for LIU Brooklyn, averaging 21.5 points, 7.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals, while shooting 52.1 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the line. He joined Providence Preseason All-American Kris Dunn and LSU freshman sensation Ben Simmons as the only players to register at least 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a game in 2015-16 with a spectacular showing against Sacred Heart.
The 6-3 combo guard tallied 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals without turning the ball over in LIU's 92-84 win. Dating back to the 2010-11 season, no other player in NCAA Division I basketball has accumulated totals in those four statistical categories with no turnovers in a game. Two days later in a narrow loss to NEC-leading Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Hermannsson went for 21 points and seven assists, including a perfect 3-3 from long range.
For the season, Hermannsson ranks in the NEC's top five in scoring (15.0, 5th), assists (4.6, 3rd), steals (1.9, 2nd), free-throw percentage (.875, 2nd), assist-turnover ratio (2.06, 1st) and minutes played (36.1, 2nd) and is sixth in three-point field goal percentage at 40.0 percent.
LIU Brooklyn returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 4 against NEC preseason favorite Mount St. Mary's. Tipoff at the Steinberg Wellness Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
