BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Martin Hermannsson was named Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday, marking the third time that Hermannsson has been honored by the league this season. The award is also the sixth for an LIU Brooklyn men's basketball player in 2015-16, as juniors Jerome Frink (twice) and Aakim Saintil have also garnered recognition.
Hermannsson earns his third NEC Player of the Week honor after yet another pair of stellar all-around performances in LIU Brooklyn's sweep. He averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.0 steals and made all 12 of his free throws in two wins that evened LIU's record at 7-7 in NEC play. In an 82-69 victory over first place Wagner on Thursday, Hermannsson tallied 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for his first-ever double-double.
Against rival St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday, Hermannsson had another stat-sheet stuffing effort with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists, five steals and zero turnovers. The Iceland native is the only player in the nation this season that has reached the 19/7/5/5 plateau without a turnover, a feat he has accomplished twice.
Hermannsson ranks fourth in the NEC in scoring (15.8) and assists (4.4), second in free throw accuracy (.884) and steals (1.9), seventh in three-point percentage (.383) and first in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.02).
LIU Brooklyn (13-12, 7-7 NEC) returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 18 at Robert Morris. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with all of the action available on NEC Front Row.
