GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – For the second straight game, senior Brian Lamboy came up big for the LIU Brooklyn baseball team, hitting a walk-off RBI single to give the Blackbirds an extra inning win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. The 8-7 win came in the first game of a doubleheader, as FDU took the second game, 17-2. With the split, the Blackbirds stand at 16-34 overall, and 10-17 in Northeast Conference play.

Game One
FDU opened scoring early in the game, scoring three runs in the first inning on four hits, including a two-RBI home run. In the bottom of the frame, the Blackbirds would close the gap to 3-2, scoring two runs without a hit. Seniors Brian Lamboy and Tommy Jakubowski were walked to lead off the inning, and the duo had a double steal to move to second and third. Sophomores Dom Paiotti and Andrew Turner each brought the runs home with RBI ground outs, and LIU was within one run.

In the top of the third, an error and an RBI single added two runs to the Knights' total, and FDU would stay up, 5-2, until the bottom of the fourth inning when LIU took control of the lead. Turner singled to lead off for the Blackbirds, and with two outs, freshman Joe Mercadante was walked. Freshman Edward Modica Jr. had an RBI double to left field, and junior Charles Misiano followed that with a triple down the right field line to tie the game up, 5-5. Lamboy then came to the plate, and had an RBI double to right center field, and advanced to third on the throw. From there, the senior was able to score on a wild pitch, putting LIU up, 7-5.

FDU tied it up in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on two hits and three walks. From there, sophomore Baylor LaPointe came in to pitch for the Blackbirds, and would hold the Knights scoreless for the rest of the game, helping LIU force extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Blackbirds came up big. With one out, Mercadante singled up the middle to get on base. The freshman stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting a runner 90 feet from home with just one out. Harrison Preschel walked, and FDU then intentionally walked Misiano to load the bases. Lamboy then came to the plate, and once again, was clutch for the Blackbirds. The senior had an RBI single down the left field line that would bring Mercadante home, and the Blackbirds had their second-straight walk-off win, 8-7.

LaPointe (6-5) had the win on the mound for LIU, pitching 4.0 innings of relief, and holding FDU scoreless, giving up just three hits while striking out three. Lamboy went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Blackbirds at the plate in the first game of the day.

Game Two
The second game of the day saw the Knights go up early and stay there, as the visiting team scored 17 runs on 18 hits and three LIU errors.

FDU started scoring in the first frame, using four hits to score two runs, and would add five more runs in the top of the third inning. An early LIU error, followed by four hits, and the Knights led, 7-0. A single home run in the top of the fourth made it 8-0, and the Knights would increase the lead to 15-0 by scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth frame. Two more runs in the top of the sixth made it 17-0 for FDU.

LIU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, on senior Luis Rios's RBI groundout, and in the bottom of the eighth, on Mercadante's triple and a sacrifice fly from Misiano.

Up next, the Blackbirds wrap up the regular season with a four-game series at Sacred Heart, Friday, May 20, to Sunday, May 22.
