BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn head men's basketball coach Jack Perri officially announced the addition of two new members to his coaching staff on Thursday. Tobe Carberry, a former assistant at Northeast Conference foe Central Connecticut, will serve as an assistant coach on Perri's staff while Greg Van Pelt, who comes from Montclair State, will be the director of basketball operations for the 2016-17 season.
Carberry was an assistant for two seasons under legendary head coach Howie Dickenmann at Central Connecticut from 2014-16. Prior to joining the Blue Devils, he spent four seasons at the University of New Haven, where he helped lead the Chargers to a 21-9 overall record in 2013-14.
In 2012-13, New Haven reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 and earned its first win on the national stage with a victory over Dominican in the NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinals. The Chargers' 16-6 conference record and third-place regular-season finish were both the best for the team since joining the Northeast-10. In addition to his stops at CCSU and New Haven, Carberry served as the top assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State University for three years.
Prior to his coaching career, Carberry was a standout player at the University of Vermont, where he ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,235 points and also stood in the top 10 in games played, field goals, assists, steals and blocked shots at the conclusion of his career. He was a finalist in the 12th Annual National Slam Dunk contest at the Final Four in Indianapolis in 2000 and was awarded the 2000 New England Division I Unsung Hero Award by the New England Basketball Coaches Association. Following his collegiate career, Carberry spent five years in professional basketball leagues in the U.S. and Europe, including the NBA Development League.
Van Pelt comes to Brooklyn after one year as an assistant coach at Division III Montclair State, where he helped head coach Marlon Spears in all aspects of the program. He helped the Red Hawks improve their overall and conference win total significantly from the previoius season. Van Pelt has also held stints as an assistant coach at Susquehanna University and East Stroudsburg. He was on the staff of two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoff teams at East Stroudsburg, including a 2011-12 squad that captured the PSAC championship. Van Pelt assisted in scouting and recruiting and was also responsible for conducting individual player workouts as well as film exchange.
Van Pelt played one season of college basketball at Wentworth Institute of Technology (2007-08) before moving on to serve as a student assistant coach with the program. He graduated from Wentworth in August of 2011 with a degree in management with a concentration in technology management, and earned his master's degree in exercise science from East Stroudsburg.
LIU Brooklyn men's basketball returns three starters from last season's squad and will tipoff the 2016-17 campaign on Friday, Nov. 11 against John Jay at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
