Track Ends 2017 With Pair Of Local Meets

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn track teams wrapped up the 2017 part of their indoor schedules with a pair of area meets this weekend. The Blackbirds competed in both the 8th Annual Bill Ward St. John's Meet at St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington and the Wagner College Seahawk Shootout at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island.

BILL WARD RESULTS
  • Juniors Eugenie Hue (57.37) and Cayla Coleman (1:bell00.21) finished 2-3 in the 400 meters, with Hue earning an IC4A/ECAC qualifying time and Coleman taking first place in her section.
    • The Blackbird women produced a similar performance in the 500 meters as freshman Tara Hernandez (1:20.19), junior Michala Webster (1:21.75) and freshman Myriah Williams (1:23.13) finished third, fourth and seventh respectively in the event.
  • The LIU men competed in a pair of events as well and put together nearly identical efforts. Junior Sean Sinclair was the runner-up in the 60 meters with a time of 6.92 while fellow third-year Roderick Moodie finished fourth with a mark of 6.96 - both IC4A qualifying times.
  • In the 500 meters, Blackbirds seniors Airrin Davis (1:09.64) and Tobias Nelson (1:11.35) finished third and fifth, respectively.

SEAHAWK SHOOTOUT RESULTS
  • The 4x400 relay team of DeShawn Bunion, freshman Braylon Wilkerson, junior Caleb Williams and freshman Beresford Sweeney ran a 3:25.97 to place third overall and second to Maryland Eastern Shore among collegiate teams.
  • In the field, junior Clinton Belle and sophomore Taylor Parker paced the Blackbirds in their respective shot put events. Parker won her second event in as many weeks with a throw of 43-7.00 (13.28m) while Belle finished with a second place toss of 47-7.00 (14.50m).
  • Graduate Jahphan Lupuku defeated all challengers in the triple jump, leaping to the title with a mark of 46-11.50 (14.31m).
  • Sophomore Angeli Andre finished third in the 300 meter dash (40.25) and Webster cracked the top ten with a ninth place run (41.25). Andre also picked up a victory in the high jump after clearing 5-3 (1.60m) on her best leap.
  • Hue and Coleman combined for LIU results again, this time in the 1000 meters. Hue was second in her section with a mark of 3:00.25 and held that spot in the final standings while Coleman won her section and placed tenth overall (3:16.58).
  • Sophomore Stephanie Esogenwune picked up a top-five finish in the long jump with a distance of 16-7.75 (5.07m).

LIU will open 2018 with another event sponsored by Wagner, the Wagner College Invitational on Saturday, January 6.
