STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Despite being one of the smallest teams in the field, the LIU Brooklyn women's track & field team put up one of the highest point totals of the weekend at the 2017 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Blackbirds finished second, with 109.5 points, behind Sacred Heart's 126.6 points, as the Pioneers captured their fourth straight crown.
Senior
Cassandra Jones led the charge for LIU, as she was named the Meet MVP, and the Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints). Freshman
Stephanie Esogenwune was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer.
A healthy chunk of runner-up LIU Brooklyn's point total came courtesy of sprinter
Cassandra Jones. The senior accounted for 28.5 points highlighted by a victory in the 500m dash. En-route to securing the NEC Most Valuable Performer Award, Jones added silver medals in the 60m and 200m dashes and ran on the Blackbirds' triumphant 4x400m relay team.
And
Stephanie Esogenwune captured the NEC Most Outstanding Rookie Performer Award, after totaling 13 points on her own, including a second-place showing in the triple jump.
The Blackbirds had multiple individual champions on the final day, including
Satima Chambers (60m dash), Jones (500m), and
Shantae McDonald, who won the 60m hurdles and the 200m dash.
In the 60m dash, Chambers took home her first NEC title, winning the event by the slightest of margins. Chambers took the top spot with a time of 7.70, rounded up from 7.692. She finished just eight hundredths of a second ahead of teammate Jones, who took silver with a time of 7.70 flat. McDonald also scored for LIU in this final, coming in eighth with a time of 7.91 seconds.
McDonald took the top spot in the 200m dash, winning her first title of the day with a time of 24.50, just ahead of Jones' 24.67 showing in second play. She won her second title of the day in the 60m hurdles, claiming the crown with a time of 8.64 seconds. Freshman
Deja Johnson added points in the hurdle sprint with her sixth place finish, in 9.12 seconds.
And Jones successfully defended her title in the 500m, winning the event by nearly two seconds, with a time of 1:13.82.
Zaahira Deboise and
Cayla Coleman scored in the event as well, coming in sixth (1:18.98) and seventh (1:19.11) respectively.
Freshman T'Reyah Johnson added points in two events for LIU, as she came in fourth in the 200m dash, with a time of 25.52. She also scored points in the 400m, coming in fifth there, with a time of 58.02.
Esogenwune took silver in the triple jump, with a final distance of 11.32m, while
Taylor Parker scored for LIU in the shot put, coming in seventh with a throw of 12.47.
The Blackbirds capped the day with an emphatic win in the 4x400m relay, as the top team came in at 3:53.70, a full second ahead of the silver medalists.
