BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn women's bowling team will head right back into action on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Bowl for the Cure one-day event up in East Haven, Conn. This will mark the first time the No. 19 Blackbirds (7-3) will play at the event hosted by their Northeast Conference foe, No. 12 Sacred Heart, the three-time defending NEC Regular Season Champions.
JONES WINS NO. 400
The Blackbirds opened up the 2018-19 season by beating No. 8 Delaware State and going 4-1 on their Saturday slate at the Kutztown Bud Whitman Memorial Tournament to finish in third place. With the four wins, seventh-year head coach Kayla Jones, already the winningest coach in school history, earned her 400th career win. On the first day, the team carried a 176.4 average in baker format and followed with a 170.3 average in traditional games to finish in 12th place in Sunday's event, giving the team a 7-3 record following their first two days of competition this season.
JOHNSON EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
LIU senior Kayla Johnson has started out her final season on a high note. In the Baker event on Saturday, Johnson was named to the All-Tournament team with a 19.3 fill frame average, fifth highest among all bowlers in the 20-team invitational. On Sunday in the traditional format event, she led the Blackbirds with a 190.8 average, playing all ten matches over the weekend as the team's anchor bowler.
BOWL FOR THE CURE PREVIEW
Besides the Blackbirds and the Pioneers, No. 15 Adelphi, Caldwell, Molloy amd LIU Post will also be in Connecticut on Saturday for a rare single day event, where each team will face each other in round robin competition.
WARHAWK CLASSIC UP NEXT
Following Saturday's event, LIU will have the rest of October off of competition and travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Classic from November 9-11 at AMF West Lanes.
