BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LIU Brooklyn redshirt senior Joel Hernandez's outstanding performance in two games last weekend has earned him a slew of weekly honors. He has been named the Lou Henson National Player of the Week by College Insider, Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, and College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week. It is the first set of weekly honors for the guard in his career.
Hernandez was unstoppable in a road sweep that stretched LIU Brooklyn's win streak to three and lifted the Blackbirds into a four-way tie for third place with a 7-5 league record. The Teaneck, NJ product averaged 31.0 points on 48.9 percent shooting from the field, including 43.8 percent from three-point territory, and added 7.0 rebounds per game. Hernandez twice set career-highs in scoring, beginning with a 30-point out-ing in LIU's 69-60 win over Sacred Heart in a nationally televised affair on ESPNU on Thursday. He scored 19 points in the second half, and after the Pioneers cut a 16-point lead down to two with seven minutes to play, the senior guard scored six straight points to build the lead back to eight. Two days later, Hernandez erupted for a career-high 32 points on 12-23 shooting as the Blackbirds posted an 84-71 win at Bryant. He hit four shots from downtown and added eight boards. Hernandez is averaging 27.3 ppg over his last four contests and ranks second in the league with 20.2 ppg on the year.
Up next, the Blackbirds host a huge home series, welcoming Saint Francis U. and Robert Morris to the Steinberg Wellness Center, February 8 and 10.
