BROOKLYN, N.Y. – LIU Brooklyn senior guard Joel Hernandez added more hardware to his growing list, as he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I District 18 First Team, it was announced Tuesday, March 13. It marks the first NABC honor for the senior in his career.
Hernandez joined Wagner's JoJo Cooper, Mount St. Mary's Junior Robinson and Keith Braxton and Jamaal King from Saint Francis U. on the first team.
Hernandez was named NEC Tournament MVP, to the NEC All-Tournament team, and earned first-team All-NEC honors this season.
Hernandez spent the season as one of the league leaders in scoring. The Teaneck, N.J. native averaged 20.2 points per game during the regular season, the second-highest total in the NEC. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game. The senior finished the regular season with three double doubles, and had 15 games with 20 points or more this season. Earlier this year, he became just the 35th player in LIU Brooklyn basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark. Since then, he's tallied 1,421 career points, ranking him 15th on the all-time scorers list. Earlier this season, he was named the Lou Henson National Player of the Week by College Insider, Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, and College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week, after averaging 31.0 points on 48.9 percent shooting from the field in two games. Hernandez twice set career-highs in scoring, beginning with a 30-point out-ing in LIU's 69-60 win over Sacred Heart in a nationally televised affair on ESPNU. Two days later, Hernandez erupted for a career-high 32 points on 12-23 shooting as the Blackbirds posted an 84-71 win at Bryant.
