BROOKLYN, N.Y. – LIU Brooklyn men's basketball senior Joel Hernandez has been chosen to participate in the inaugural Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship that will take place Friday, March 30 through Sunday, April 1, 2018 at St. Mary's University's Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
Hernandez will represent the Northeast Conference, on a team with Wagner's JoJo Cooper, and Junior Robinson and Chris Wray from Mount St. Mary's.
Hernandez finished the year with a multitude of post season accolades, including being named to the NABC Division I District 18 First Team, being named Northeast Conference Tournament MVP, selected to the NEC All-Tournament team, and given first team All-NEC honors. Hernandez spent the season as one of the league leaders in scoring, en route to leading LIU to its first NEC championship title in five years, and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Teaneck, N.J. native averaged 20.2 points per game during the regular season, the second-highest total in the NEC. He also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game. The senior finished the regular season with three double doubles, and had 15 games with 20 points or more this season. He also became just the 35th player in LIU Brooklyn basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark, tallying 1,421 career points, ranking him 15th on the all-time scorers list. He was also named the Lou Henson National Player of the Week by College Insider, Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, and College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week.
The 3X3U, created by Intersport, includes 32 four-man teams from every Division I college basketball conference competing in a 3-on-3 tournament. The 132 participants, comprised of seniors who have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, will be competing for a $100,000 prize pool.
Each team roster is comprised of four eligible seniors from the same Division I college basketball conference. Teams will be organized into eight pools of four and each team will be guaranteed three pool play games. The Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship Player Selection Committee consists of college basketball experts from a wide range of media outlets including ESPN, CBS Sports, The Athletic, USA Today, NBC Sports, The Ringer, and more. The Committee worked feverishly throughout the season to determine the nation's top senior college basketball players who have been selected to compete. The complete rosters for each conference will be revealed through a series of studio shows streamed live on Twitter once a day from Monday, March 26 through Thursday, March 29.
Play begins on Friday, March 3,0 with 24 pool-play games streamed live on Twitter (@3X3UHoops) from 7:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. EST and will continue on Saturday March 31 with another 24 pool-play games streamed live on Twitter from 11:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. EST. The event will conclude on Sunday, April 1, with the quarterfinals broadcast live on Twitter from 1:35-3:00 p.m. EST, and the semifinals, third-place game and championship games set to broadcast live on ESPN2 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
