2018-19 LIU Brooklyn Men's Basketball Schedule
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -The 2017-18 Northeast Conference championship-winning LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team, under the direction of second-year head coach Derek Kellogg, announced its upcoming schedule Wednesday afternoon. The Blackbirds will play 14 games at home during the 2018-19 season, including at least one at the Barclays Center, the home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. The dates and opponents for LIU Brooklyn's Barclays Center games will be released at a later date.
The Blackbirds begin their season nearly a week earlier than last year due to new NCAA rules. LIU will open with two games at home in the Steinberg Wellness Center, hosting the College of New Rochelle on November 6, and Brown University on Friday, November 9 as a part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The remaining non-conference home games include NJIT (November 24) and Binghamton (December 21).
A mid-November spree of road games highlights some of the toughest teams the Blackbirds will face this season. LIU opens on the road at Fairfield (November 13), before taking on two teams on the road as a part of the Basketball Hall of Fame's Belfast Classic. The Blackbirds will travel to California to take on San Francisco November 18, and then travel directly to Wisconsin, to face off against Milwaukee on Tuesday, November 20. After a quick stint in Brooklyn, the Blackbirds will travel to Ireland to take part in the Belfast Classic, facing off against two opponents on November 29 and 30.
Upon their return from the UK, LIU wraps up non conference road play at Saint Peter's (December 8), Stony Brook (December 12) and against local rival Fordham on Sunday, December 30.
The Blackbirds open up their defense of the NEC title on Thursday, January 3 and Saturday, January 5, traveling north to take on Sacred Heart and Bryant in the first weekend of league action. From there, LIU will host back-to-back weekends of league play in the Steinberg Wellness Center. January 10 and 12, Brooklyn will host the Pennsylvania contingent of the NEC, welcoming Robert Morris and Saint Francis U. The following weekend, LIU will take on two local NEC teams, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, January 19, and St. Francis Brooklyn as a part of a doubleheader with the women's team on Monday, January 21.
Following two weeks at home, the Blackbirds spent two weeks on the road, traveling to Mount St. Mary's (Jan. 24) and CCSU (Jan. 26), and Fairleigh Dickinson (Jan. 31) and Wagner College (Feb. 2), in a rematch of last year's championship game. Other road games for the rest of the season include a Valentine's Day matchup against the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn (Feb. 14), and the annual PA road trip to Robert Morris (Feb. 21) and Saint Francis U. (Feb. 23).
LIU will spent three of the last four weekends of the season at home in Brooklyn, hosting Mount (Feb. 7), Wagner (Feb. 9), Sacred Heart (Feb. 16) and CCSU (Feb. 28). The team will celebrate the seniors and have the last home game of the regular season Saturday, March 2, when they welcome Bryant to downtown Brooklyn.
This year's NEC Tournament quarterfinals round is slated for March 6, while the semifinals will take place March 9 and the championship will be March 12, with all three games being hosted by the highest remaining seed.
