FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The LIU Brooklyn softball team (2-3) ended their first road trip of the season by upending Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2, on Sunday at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers. Junior
Haley Irvis earned her second win in as many days, while freshman
Elena Valenzuela picked up her first collegiate save.
The Eagles (4-1), who topped the Blackbirds 7-0 on Saturday, got out to an early 1-0 lead on a pair of singles in the bottom of the second inning. Irvis (2-1), making her third start of the season had her strongest outing so far, going 5.0 innings and yielding only two hits, two runs and striking out three batters.
After the second frame, the Blackbirds bounced right back when freshman shortstop Angelina Reno hit a one-out single to left and junior Patricia Griffin nailed a double to left center for her first run batted in of the season. Junior Katie Hinkle bunted Griffin over to third next with two down, when sophomore Kiana Cisneros reached via an infield error, which extended the inning and allowed Griffin to score the lead run.
In the top of the fifth, LIU extended the lead via a walk to Reno, who came around four batters later on senior Schae Dickson's infield single to shortstop, making the game 3-1. Reno, who has started all five games to date, scored two runs on the day, her first two of her collegiate career.
In the bottom of the sixth following a leadoff walk to the Eagles, Valenzuela came in relief for Irvis. Valenzuela gave up a walk and an unearned run, as the Blackbirds held a 3-2 lead going into the final frame. In earning the save, Valenzuela yielded only one hit, one walk and struck out one batter.
Next weekend, the Blackbirds head back down to Florida for the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Tournament at Disney in Lake Buena Vista from Friday, Feb. 15, through Sunday, Feb. 17. Over the three days, LIU will face (in order): Bethune-Cookman, UMass, Villanova, Troy and Stetson.
