CLEARWATER, FLA. -- The LIU Brooklyn softball team beat Brown 2-1 on a walkoff hit by freshman
Camryn Lyman to close out the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational Tournament in Clearwater. on Sunday. The Blackbirds (15-11) finished the weekend with a 2-3 mark, but continued the team's streak of winning the last game played in all six pre-conference tournaments they play in this season. Also, the team's 15 wins at this point is a program record, as they head up north for the remainder of the season.
Freshman Elena Valenzuela (8-3) threw a dominating complete game to earn her eighth win of the season. Valenzuela yielded only five hits and did not walk a batter in 7.0 innings.
The Blackbirds got on the board in the first inning, with runners on first and third base, sophomore Kiana Cisneros took off to steal second base. The when the throw came through from the catcher, senior Schae Dickson broke home to steal home and take the lead, 1-0.
Brown's Karina Chavarria got the score squared at 1-1 with an RBI single in the fifth frame, but Valenzuela once again limited the damage.
Then in the bottom of the seventh inning, already with two outs, LIU sophomore Ryleigh Bermea got the action going with a single. Next, sophomore pitcher Victoria Lowe pinch hit junior Katie Hinkle and earned a four-pitch walk. With Hinkle back on first base, junior Patricia Griffin hit a comebacker to the right of the mound and the pitcher could not make the play, loading the bases.
Freshman Camryn Lyman was next to bat, on the first pitch she drilled a shot to centerfield for the walk off single.
Brown's (5-7) Grace Ladd went the complete 6.2 innings for the Bears, giving up only five hits and striking out eight batters, as she fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Blackbirds will be right back in action on Wednesday, March 20 to play their first game up north, at nearby Hofstra in Hempstead, LI at 3:00 p.m.
