BROOKLYN, N.Y. - For the second year in a row, two members of the LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team were awarded post-season honors, it was announced by the Northeast Conference office Tuesday afternoon. The honorees were announced as a prelude to the 2019 NEC Men's Basketball Tournament, which begins on Wednesday with quarterfinal play at four campus sites. Senior Raiquan Clark was named First Team All-NEC, while redshirt sophomore Ty Flowers was named Third Team All-NEC. It's the second straight year of postseason honors for Clark, and the first career honors for Flowers. LIU Brooklyn has landed at least one player on the All-NEC first team in each of the last four seasons and ten of the last 11 years.
Raiquan Clark, who was named third team All-NEC last season, was named to the first team after leading the NEC in scoring all season long. The New Haven, Conn. native averaged 19.4 points per game this season, leading all scorers in the conference all season. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds per game, ranking sixth in the NEC, and ranked in the top ten in field goal percentage (..507 - 6th), steals (1.30 per game - 10th), offensive rebounds (1.97 per game - 9th), defensive rebounds (4.83 per game - 6th) and minutes played (32.57 - 10th). He finished the regular season with six double doubles, and had 14 games this season where he scored 20 points or more. Earlier this year, he became the 36th player in LIU Brooklyn basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark. Since then, he's tallied 1,383 career points, ranking him 18th on the all time scoring list. Clark was named NEC Player of the Week earlier this season, after his 23-point performance in the Blackbirds' win over Fordham.
Ty Flowers joined the Blackbirds this year after redshirting last season due to NCAA transfer regulations, and quickly became a constant for LIU, earning third team All-NEC honors. This season, he has set new career highs in every single category, including points (27), rebounds (12), assists (7) and blocks (5). He currently ranks 14th in the league in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game, and has had a team-high eight double doubles this year. The Waterbury, Conn. native also ranks in the league in blocks per game (5th - 1.43), three-point field goals made per game (5th- 2.33), defensive rebounds per game (5th - 5.03), rebounds per game (7th - 6.7), three-point field goal percentage (9th - .383), field goal percentage (11th - .473), steals per game (11th - 1.20) and minutes played (15th - 31.53). He had five games with 20 points or more, and was the first LIU player in nearly five years to register five blocks in a single game against Sacred Heart.
Clark, Flowers and the rest of the Blackbirds take part in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed, Wednesday, March 6. LIU will travel north to take on No. 3 seed Sacred Heart in a game slated to tip off at 6 p.m.
