STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn softball team suffered a tough non-conference loss Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision on the road at Stony Brook. With the defeat, LIU moves to 23-14 on the season.
The Blackbirds struck early in the matchup against a strong Stony Brook team. Junior
Patricia Griffin led off with a walk. She'd advance on a ground out, and with two outs, came home from second when sophomore
Alina Castillo singled to right field.
LIU's early 1-0 lead was erased in the bottom of the frame, however. Three walks, a hit and a sacrifice fly would score two runs for the home team, and the Seawolves held on to that 2-1 advantage for multiple innings.
The Blackbirds would get runners in scoring position in both the top of the third and the top of the fourth, but couldn't bring them home. Stony Brook added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two unearned runs on a long double that put them up, 4-1.
LIU made an attempt at a rally in the top of the seventh, when
Emily Collins walked with one out, and senior
Amanda Domingo singled to right field to put two on for the Blackbirds, but Stony Brook would get the final out to squelch the comeback attempt and take the 4-1 win.
Up next, the Blackbirds hope to host two home doubleheaders on LIU Field this weekend. LIU will take on Northeast Conference foes Central Connecticut State on Friday, April 19 at 1 p.m., and Wagner, Saturday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
