BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn baseball team dropped two games to Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon at LIU Field, as the Pioneers' pitching staff threw two complete game shutouts to take two wins, 8-0 and 11-0. The two teams wrap up the four game series with a nine-inning game slated to begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 26.
Sacred Heart 8, LIU 0The Pioneers had a two-out rally in the top of the first inning to get game one started right away. SHU had back-to-back singles, followed by a home run to clear the bases, putting the visitors up, 3-0. Sacred Heart would add two more runs in the top of the third inning, scoring on a passed ball and another home run.
Two more home runs in the top of the sixth put the Pioneers up, 7-0, and the visitors added another long bomb in the top of the seventh to clinch the final, 8-0.
Senior
Brian Drapeau (0-3) had the loss on the mound, while Jason Foley (2-1) had the win, striking out five and giving up just three hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Brian Lamboy,
Tommy Jakubowski and
Luis Rios each recorded hits for LIU in the loss, while
Anthony Capo had a stolen base.
Sacred Heart 11, LIU 0In the second game, the Blackbirds held it close early on. After a run scored on a sacrifice fly in the first, LIU was able to get a groundout to end the inning down 1-0. But in the top of the second, errors prolonged the inning, and the Pioneers scored three runs to solidify the lead, 4-0.
SHU would add a run in the top of the third, and use two doubles and a home run to add three more runs in the top of the fourth to go up, 8-0. A three-run long bomb in the top of the sixth accounted for the final three SHU runs, as the Pioneers would take the win, 11-0.
Jesus Media had the win on the mound for Sacred Heart, pitching 6.0 innings, striking out six and giving up just four hits. Mike Limbo pitched a perfect inning of relief, holding LIU hitless in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman
William Jackson III had the loss for LIU, falling to 1-1 on the season. Freshman
Joe Mercadante pitched one strong inning for LIU in the loss, holding SHU hitless in the seventh.
At the plate, Lamboy and Rios once again had hits for the Blackbirds, while freshmen
Kyle Ruth and Edward Monica accounted for LIU's only other hits.
