LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The 2019 LIU Brooklyn softball team lost both of their Saturday contests, 9-3 to Villanova first, and then 9-1 in five innings to Troy to close out the day. The weekend event at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex will finish for the Blackbirds (3-6) on Sunday with a matchup against Stetson at 9:00 a.m.

VILLANOVA 9, LIU 3
In game one on the day, Villanova put up a five-spot in the top of the second inning against the Blackbirds and never looked back, winning in the end, 9-3.

The Blackbirds tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman catcher Samantha Garcia hit her first career home run over the left field fence to get LIU on the board. Then after Kiana Cisneros' second single of the game, and a pitching change by the Wildcats, sophomore infielder Alina Castillo had an at bat for the ages. She started out with a 1-1 count, before fouling off five pitches and getting the count to 3-2, when she blasted the 10th pitch of the at bat over right field for her first career homer (53 games), to cut the score to 6-3.

For LIU, sophomore hurler Victoria Lowe picked up her third loss of the season, yielding four earned over four innings with one strikeout. Junior Haley Irvis threw the last three frames to close out the game, before going out in game two for her first start of the weekend.

TROY 9, LIU 1
In game number two on Saturday, the Blackbirds fell to Troy, 9-1, in five innings, after allowing the final three runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. The Trojans (6-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the third inning to lock the game up.

LIU took the lead in the top of the first inning when freshman Samantha Garcia smashed her second home run of the day, this time to right center, for a 1-0 lead.

After the first, Troy starter Annie Willis (3-1) only yielded one hit, going five innings, with one run (earned) and three strikeouts for the Trojans.

Freshman Elena Valenzuela (1-1) took the loss, going 4.0 innings, while giving up only two earned runs on seven hits, no walks and one strikeout.
