FORT MYERS, FLA. -- The LIU Brooklyn softball team began the 2019 campaign on Friday, facing two of the top teams in the Mid American Conference, resulting in a pair of losses, 7-4 to Ball State and 7-1 to Kent State at the Florida Gulf Coast Kickoff Classic in Fort Meyers.

BALL STATE 7, LIU 4
In the top of the fourth inning, with the score knotted 0-0, LIU junior righthander Haley Irvis yielded only three hits in the season opener, but walked four consecutive batters in the fourth inning following an infield error to open up the scoring. The Cardinals went on to build an insurmountable 6-0 before the frame was over. Irvis (0-1), who did not give up an earned run, had seven strikeouts in her 3.2 innings of work .

In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Kiana Cisneros hit a triple down the left field line and scored two batters later on an Emily Collins ground out. Then with the score at 7-1 in the last of the seventh, the Blackbirds scored three runs on a trio of walks and an error by the Cardinals for a 7-4 final.

Freshman Elena Valenzuela played stopper for the Blackbirds in the game, facing the final 15 batters over 3.1 innings, giving up only one hit, while striking out four batters in her collegiate debut.

KENT STATE 7, LIU 1
The Golden Flashes put up four runs in the first two innings, as freshman Andrea Scali threw a complete game, one-hitter with 12 strikeouts against the Blackbirds, en route to a 7-1 final in their season debut.

Kiana Cisneros, who reached on an error in the fourth inning came around to score on the play for LIU's only run. Senior Schae Dickson, the next batter, had the Blackbirds only hit in the game, a single to left field followed by a steal of second base, but was unable to score in the frame. Freshman Alyssa Martinez, getting her first start of the season, was the only other baserunner for LIU with a leadoff walk in the top of the third inning.

LIU starter Victoria Lowe (0-1) had two strikeouts in 5.2 innings in her season debut. Freshman Zoe Estoppey faced the final batter of the game in her first-ever collegiate appearance.

NEXT UP
LIU will play another single game versus Kent State on Saturday at 10:00 a.m, before taking on the host team at 2:30 pm. The Blackbirds will conclude the three-day event with another tilt against FGCU on Sunday at 11:15 p.m.
